about the film

the story of iron river

Director's statement

Iron River is a film about grief, and the loss and regret that comes with that. With this Short film I wish to convey the feelings of regret that I had when I lost someone close to me, a feeling many of us have either experienced or will experience in our lifetimes. The inability to have one last talk with my loved one motivating the themes of this film. Regret is a self-destructive emotion, and this is shown through the main protagonist of Hans, who blames himself for not being there for his wife, something I feel becomes more relevant the older we get.

Through this film I want to show the acceptance of loss and letting-go of regret. For Though we all experience loss in different ways , no matter who you are, it changes you.

Synopsis

Hans, a grieving writer and war veteran, finds his late wife’s last poem. In it she describes a location she refers to as the ‘Iron River’. Hans travels by train to where he believes this location may be.

Once on the train Hans contemplates the message, falling asleep whilst doing so. Once he comes to, however, the train has changed. The once vibrant and peaceful nature outside has become an unending abyss of nothingness. The entire locomotive has been encapsulated by this void and all signs of other passengers have disappeared. Hans hears a noise, behind a figure stares at him. Terrified by this, Hans runs away to the door of the carriage .
